Funeral rites in India

anyeshti India (final funeral rites or sacraments) are formally described in Dharmashastras law books and other texts, including a special section of Garuda Purana. The actual practice however, often departs from the textual tradition. There are rituals that are performed before death, relating to the disposition of the body, which take place after death to prevent the soul to take the form of a ghost, and it later when the person is honored as an ancestor. A person who almost always will be cremated at death, unless he or she is an infant or a beggar, in which case it is more often the body buried. Part of the ritual post-mortem is to place the body in a coffin, in either a sitting or lying position, which will be the cremation of the family or taken in a bullock cart or
other means of transport.

At least part of this trip will be accompanied by the chanting ritual. The body is then kept in
wood funeral, always facing south, and south is the direction of death. The eldest son is the secular officiant cremation. After bypassing the body pours oblations of water on it, cracking the skull to release the soul and lights the funeral pyre. The funeral procession as often wait until the body is almost completely consumed. Once the cremation is complete the delegation returns home to make atonement, mantras and other rituals, in order to avoid "contamination death "or the effects of being in the vicinity of a corpse. Brahmins in particular, observe a period of 10 days when no one in the family is allowed to leave the home after a death. After a day or two, the eldest son is returning to the base of the burning to regain the ashes and bones. The ashes are usually put in an urn and or
buried or dumped into a sacred river like the Ganges and Cauvery, ensuring the release or heaven for the dead. Often, a 11-day ritual is performed to provide a spiritual body of the deceased, in order to prevent the deceased from becoming a ghost wandering homeless and for eternity. Later, shraddha or ancestor rites are performed each year to support the person in the other world. SADHUS mendicant Brahmins or are buried in a special rite. The body is placed in a hole deeper into the yoga, the seated position. It is then covered in salt from the bottom of the chin, and the whole is covered with soil. Saints in India tend to be buried in graves. Often covering the tomb stands on the ground to its constituent Samadhi or tomb becomes a place of holy pilgrimage.
